The first is a higher-end model based on the famous 62MAS from 1965. It feels very fitting to coat a dive or field watch in stealthy black, and the trio we show you today are just that. In the past, we’ve seen models being launched in the Presage, but the fan favourites are arguably the Prospex models. The blackened watches in this series can originate from pretty much anything Seiko does, from relatively low-end to higher-end models and from field to dive watches. The Black Series sub-collection is part of a long-lasting range of watches all sharing a common theme. We welcome the Seiko Prospex The Black Series Limited Edition 2023 Collection, with the 1965 Divers SLA067, the Divers SPB335 and the Alpinist SPBJ337. New to 2023 is a trio of watches sharing a blacked-out theme, just as we’ve seen with the King Samurai and Tortoise in 2022, for instance. Just think of the Save the Oceans program, and the regular new models introduced under that moniker, as well as The Black Series, another popular class of watches. These sub-collections can be quite expansive and basically run for years with updates coming every now and then. The dial layout and 24-hour bezel, combined with the unique dial texture, makes for an interesting - but possibly polarizing - aesthetic.Seiko has made it a habit of diversifying most of its collections through all sorts of combinations of textures, materials and colours. But the popular GMT function is always welcome, and here it's accompanied by an unusual combination of features: there's a power reserve indicator around 9:30 and the date is displayed in a subdial at 6 o'clock. These automatic models are relative outliers in the Prospex or Presage line for incorporating complications. Seiko has now expanded on this sub-(sub)-line with a new GMT model available in dial four dial colors of black (SPB221), green (SPB219), blue (SPB217) and brown (SPB225). Within Presage are many sub-collections (yes, Seiko's taxonomy can be confusing), including contemporary dress-style watches called Sharp Edge that have striking, faceted dial executions. They come in dial colors of gray, green and cream. While common design cues like the triangular hour markers make the connection clear, the new models feel contemporary in other ways, including a slightly upsized case. While they lack luxury bells and whistles, these models live in the Prospex line's sub-$1,000 tier, but have the excellent build quality, specs and finishing that that makes the collection consistently punch well above its weight.
While the "re-creation" models are squarely aimed at Seiko collectors, the reinterpretations have a much broader audience.
For close followers and mega-fans of Seiko (and there are many), the formula is familiar, but no less exciting: accompany the high-end, limited remake with "modern reinterpretations" of the vintage design at a much more affordable price point.
